What The F**K is Social Media?

Now that I’ve made the transition from being a blogger and social media geek to working in social media, it’s time for a dedicated blog about social media.

Let’s begin with the basics. What the f**k is social media? I get this question a lot now that I’m back in the States* and people are just starting to get into it. However, with the increase in popularity of social media I’m also seeing a lot of charlatans and social media snake oil salesmen who’ve been on Twitter for a millisecond, have never used Skype and have never consistently written a blog. While being a dedicated user of social media might not make me an expert, the fact that I’ve successfully navigated the waters, and gotten clear payoffs from blogging and being online, does give me expertise.

So how to answer the question? Good for me, social media is a conversation that is very much about sharing and giving credit where its due.

Here are two presentations which answer the question, “what is social media?”  Marta Kagan created both of these great slide shows. They define social media and you come away getting it even if you didn’t get it before.

Plus, it’s just a banging way to start off this blog.

Now that you know what it is, let the discussion begin 😉

*For those who don’t know, I spent the last eight years living in South Korea, which is a social media hub with cheap broadband all across that hard-working nation. I arrived fresh from San Francisco thinking I knew the drill. However, I left eight years later firmly plugged in to social media.
